It is said that one in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.
This October, at Alishan, we will be conducting activities to raise awareness about breast cancer while also launching initiatives to bring the community together so that we can all support those affected by the disease.
Personally, I think that when we’re young, we sometimes feel as though “cancer is something that happens much later in life”—as if it were something distant. However, over the past few years, seeing people close to me—people my own age—go through cancer has made me feel even more strongly that this is by no means someone else’s problem; it’s a disease that can happen to anyone.
Our hope is to help those around us learn even a little more about breast cancer. We also aim to encourage people to prioritize their own health and get regular screenings, as well as to support the “AYA Cancer Care and Support Research Group”—an organization that assists adolescents and young adults (the AYA generation) who are going through cancer, offering guidance on the various challenges they face while coping with the disease at a young age.
We decided to support the AYA Oncology Alliance because a dear friend of the Alishan staff—who was the first to encourage us to participate in this Breast Cancer Awareness Month—received support from this organization through her own experience with cancer.
Even a little bit of knowledge from each of us could lead to a big change. 🎀
