Made from carob powder which is derived from the pod of the Mediterranean carob tree or St. John’s-bread, carob chip’s flavor is milder than chocolate. Carob's cocoa-like nutty earthy flavor comes from the roasting process. Unsweetened carob is naturally sweet and without the bitterness found in chocolate. As such, when using carob chips as a substitute for chocolate chips, you may want to use less sugar than called for. Carob chips contains less fat and more fiber than the same amount of chocolate chips, making it a healthier alternative.
