New Organic Tunisian Olive Oil
Olive oil has been produced in Tunisia for thousands of years, but
until recently labelling laws regarding country of origin meant that
much Tunisian oil was exported to Italy blended with, and then labelled
as Italian oil. Tunisia is now seeking their own place in the market,
selling organic, extra virgin oil at competitive prices. Tunisia is
located just across the Mediteranian Sea from Italy and is warmer,
producing an earlier crop than it's European competitors. Farming still
largely follows traditional methods which means low levels of
fertilizers and pesticides in the country as a whole. HUILERIE LOUED
is famous for producing high quality oils using traditional methods.
They hand pick the fruit, rather than using machines to shake the olives
down from the trees, and crush it slowly in order to maintain a low
temperature, so preserving it's taste and flavour.
Olive Oil has long been a part of the western diet. It's a common
ingredient in salad dressings and Italian cooking. It makes fantastic
bread too but isn't recommended for cakes or biscuits due to it's
distinctive flavour. If you fancy flavouring the oil it's easy to do
(see side bar). This oil is high in monounsaturated fats, which support
good cholestorol and lower bad cholesterol and it's full of
antioxidants. It's even starting to look as though adding olive oil to
your diet may help protect your skin from sun damage due to four of
these antioxidants. The wonders of olive oil don't stop in the kitchen
though. It is great for your skin and hair too. Summer wreaks havoc on
hair, with the drying effects of the sun, plus chemicals in swimming
pools and being tied up day after day. To give your hair a little TLC
just warm some oil - sit a small bowl of oi in a big bowl of hot water -
apply to your hair, wrap your head in a towel and leave it for about 20
minutes. You'll need to give your hair a really good shampoo
afterwards, probably twice, to make sure all the oil is gone (sadly
liquid soaps like Bronners don't tend to work well). You will be left
with shiny, bouncy hair. You can rub olive oil into dry feet, then put
on a pair of socks (these will discolour over time so don't use any that
are too precious) and let the oil work its magic overnight. You can
apply it to your face too. Just massage in a little oil before washing
with soap as normal. Wonderful as olive oil is, don't go overboard or
you'll end up oily rather than moisturized.
